A surrogate family had developed around Rogue’s, a small magic shop in Queens, New York run by a guy called Roger to give local kids many of whom are or have been addicts, gang members, and dropouts, a safe place to hang out. Misdirection explores this family through Roger and three charismatic fledging magicians over two years following their struggle for success and change, and their never ending dance with disillusionment. While Misdirection is about magic’s ability to inspire, it is also a gritty look at the difficulty of fulfilling a different dream, particularly against the backdrop of a dark past and harsh economic barriers. To succeed in the competitive and illusory world of magic, like their hero David Blaine, requires everything of them. This total commitment could be their gateway to a better life. Many hurdles including inevitable failures will radically change their path and their understanding of themselves. Will our young men lose inspiration in the wake of defeat, or will we have the unique opportunity to watch them rise to the challenge, learn from their mistakes, and continue to battle toward their dreams? Our cameras have been at ground zero as our guys burn to achieve greatness both professionally and personally. The film shows the raw emotional human drama of our characters lives as each reaches a different place personally and professionally. And of course there is magic, which inevitably brings to life the childlike wonderment in us all.
